GEUM urbanum

Wood Avens, Herb Bennet

(Rosaceae)

Geum urbanum is leggy plant, about a foot or so high, with large coarse pinnate leaves, long slender stems, and small yellow flowers with the points of the calyx visible between the petals, with a tufted centre which develops into a spiny brown seedpod.

It is mainly a plant of woods and hedges. The name 'Herb Bennet' is from the Latin herba benedicta, because the aromatic roots were once thought to protect against evil.
